Ice particle habits in Arctic clouds
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ice crystals in atmospheric clouds have shapes, which affect their density, terminal fall velocity, growth rate and radiative properties. In calculations for climate change predictions, weather forecasting of precipitation, and remote sensing retrievals, idealized crystal shapes uch as columns, needles, plates and dendrites are assumed. Using new technology imaging instrumentation with a resolution of 2.3 gm, recent observations in Arctic clouds have shown that such pristine habits only describe approximately 3% of the particles. The measurements were made from an aircraft during April 1998 and cover atemperature range of 0 øC to -45 øC. Boundary layer, multi-layer and cirrus clouds were examined. The commonly observed irregularly shaped particles either consisted offaceted polycrystalline particles or sublimating (solid to vapor) ice particles with smooth curving sides and edges. Since climate warming is now predicted to be largest in the Arctic, and cloud properties significantly affect the radiation balance, it will be necessary toconsider the effects of non-pristine ice particle habits in such calculations and predictions.

Secondary Organic Contribution to Particles Formed on the Ice Melted Arctic Ocean
Due to climate warming and consequently due to ice and snow melting of the Arctic Ocean, the highly biologically active ocean surface area has been expanding quickly making possible longer marine biota growth seasons during polar summers. That increase the probability of the remote marine environment secondary contribution, especially secondary organic contribution, to the particle production a...
متن کاملPossible roles of ice nucleation mode and ice nuclei depletion in the extended lifetime of Arctic mixedphase clouds
[1] The sensitivity of Arctic mixed phase clouds to the mode of ice particle nucleation is examined using a 1-D cloud model. It is shown that the lifetime of a simulated low-level Arctic mixed-phase stratus is highly sensitive to the number concentration of deposition/condensationfreezing nuclei, and much less sensitive to the number of contact nuclei. Simulations with prognostic ice nuclei con...
متن کاملParameterization of shortwave ice cloud optical properties for various particle habits
[1] The relative importance of ice clouds in the climate system is highly uncertain. Measurements of their microphysical properties are sparse, especially given their complex structure and large variability in particle size, shape, and density. To better understand the role of ice clouds in the climate system, parameterizations of their radiative properties are needed. The shortwave bulk optica...
متن کاملRadiative and Microphysical Properties of Autumnal Arctic Clouds
Clouds strongly modulate the surface energy budget over the Arctic ice pack. In autumn, as the amount of insolation rapidly decreases, their main influence is felt through enhancing the emissivity of the cold dry atmosphere. During autumn, low clouds are present over the arctic ice pack nearly 60% of the time. In addition, ice clouds, which are not included in this statistic, become increasingl...
متن کاملInterannual Variations of Arctic Cloud Types in Relation to Sea Ice
Sea ice extent and thickness may be affected by cloud changes, and sea ice changes may in turn impart changes to cloud cover. Different types of clouds have different effects on sea ice. Visual cloud reports from land and ocean regions of the Arctic are analyzed here for interannual variations of total cloud cover and nine cloud types, and their relation to sea ice. Over the high Arctic, cloud ...
